Our attention has been drawn to a publication published by The Nation Newspapers with the misleading caption: “FOUR FEARED DEAD IN LAGOS CLASH”

To say the least, the report did not only grossly misinform unsuspecting members of the public, what is more worrisome is that the report therein is not only false and misleading but also lacking in merit. The story as also published in some dailies is very unfortunate and meant to do maximum damage to the image of Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) and its personnel, who have been gallant in defending the defenseless citizens of the Local Government.

Having read with keen interest the completely self–serving spirited attempt to comprehensively misrepresent the true situation with respect to the report, it has become imperative and timely that the unsuspecting public be informed of the true situation.

I want to state here categorically and emphatically that there was never a clash between neighbourhood watchers, Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps attached to the Local Government, and traders. What happen on that faithful day was that  at about 5.20pm a group of men from the Community Policing Youth Vanguard numbering about 100 invaded the premises of the Local Government with guns, bottles and other instrument of destruction attacking everyone within the premises and advancing towards my office possibly coming to kill me.

Dangerous weapons including, bottles and machetes were used freely, while interlocking stones were thrown at will.  Several people sustained grave injuries.

It took the gallant efforts of men of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defense Corps (NSCDC) attached to the Local Government to push the hoodlums outside the premises, though some members of staff had already been wounded.

It is interesting to note that the presence of the Police from the Area E Command did not disperse the hoodlums around the premises rather they were romancing them instead of effecting arrest. We paused to ask, are the police for the protection of defenseless citizens or the other way round?

Eventually we got the intervention of OP MESA and RRS from Alausa, Ikeja that dispersed the hoodlums and cordoned off 41 Road thereby preventing further attack.

Meanwhile, earlier in the day, just as we returned from the Tree Planting Campaign exercise, members of the same group attacked officials of the Local Government (Neighbourhood Watch) at 3rd Gate (Alakija) Festac Town.  Niyi a member of the Community Policing Youth Vanguard led the attack.

Furthermore, members of the Neighbourhood Watch and Environmental Task Force approached the Police from the Area E Command at the point of the attack at 3rd Gate, Festac Town for support and an arrest was made.  However, when the Leader of the Community Policing Youth Vanguard, Emmanuel Onwa, arrived at the scene, he ordered the Police to release the arrested hoodlums and turned the matter against the officials of the Local Government instantly.

The evening attack undoubtedly was a follow up to that of the 3rd Gate, Festac Town earlier in the day.

We challenged the sponsored writer to show the general public the dead bodies. As a journalist, one would want to believe that there should be what we call an investigation before a story can be used. Can the writer, show the world the four dead bodies? Can he give the general public pictorial evidence? Can we know the doctors and nurses that attended to the injured, can they give the registration number of the vehicles that took the body away, and can they tell the world where the deceased were deposited?, all of these must be substantiated for further investigation. The protagonist of this lie that is capable of creating mayhem should be immediately arrested and prosecuted.

The truth of the matter is that the Community Policing Youth Vanguard, a notorious group set up by the Area E Commander, ACP Dan Okoro is hell bent on perpetrating their evil deeds and we will not give in to hoodlums.

It is important to state that, The Nation Newspaper should verify their facts, as a matter of ethics and law and also verify the authenticity of this group. The Nation should not be used by agents of destruction, who are hell bent on destroying our environment and the good name of the Executive Chairman of Amuwo Odofin Local Government, Comrade Ayodele Adewale.

Finally, the Local Government, through this medium, wishes to inform the general public to discard the report in its entirety.
