It is with profound humour I welcome everyone to yet another edition of spelling bee competition among our students. It is with utmost pride to inform you that this Local Government produced Chidera Amakor, the winner of the 2009 Spelling Bee Competition at Primary Schools level.
I am well pleased to tell all and sundry that education is a catalyst and vehicle of development in any society. Parents and guardians must endeavour to encourage reading culture among their wards as this will go a long way in moulding them not only to national, but international standard.
Chidera Amakor did us proud in 2009 by emerging the overall winner in the Primary School category of the Spelling Bee Competition. Her first place position resulted into the award of a trophy and cash gifts of huge amounts of money at the State Level and a One Day Chairmanship seat at Amuwo Odofin Local Government. She was also awarded scholarship with a monthly stipend that was the envy of her peers in the Local Government.
Our aim in this year’s event is to again challenge our youths in the Primary and Secondary Schools to ride and indeed beat the record that was set by Chidera Amakor by winning the Primary and Secondary categories.
My Administration had invested a lot by providing a conducive environment in our schools so as to facilitate positive and better results. In an attempt to ensure that pupils are healthy and grow according to natural law, the first lady, Princess Zainab Adewale dewormed pupils from different schools. We are now constructing 15 ultra modern toilets and engaged 44 cleaners and 20 lawn managers for our public schools. In addition, we have purchased and distributed free 500 JAMB forms and free 600 G.C.E forms to help the indigent students in Amuwo Odofin, constructed Igbologun Primary School, Igbologun (A block of 6 classrooms),a community in the riverine, renovated 3rd Avenue Primary School, at Festac Town, renovated public library at 5th Avenue, Festac Town, to a total of 12 primary schools renovated upland, distributed free 220,000 exercise books, 13,380 uniforms and 6,069 writing materials with mathematical sets for primary school children during the anniversary, renovated and equipped the Vocational Training Centre at Ado Soba, requested approval from the Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs for production of 2,000 desks and benches, organized Education Summit, the first of its kind by a Local Government in Lagos State, we also organized the following: 2009 edition of Easter Monday Picnic for Children at Badagry, 2009 edition of Children’s Day Celebration at Badagry, free WAEC/ NECO Literature film show on Romeo and Juliet with Macbeth for students preparing for English Literature exams, “Stand Up, Take
Action Against Poverty” advocacy campaign for school children and collaborated with the Executive of Residents of 7th Avenue in the launching of 2009 empowerment project for the children. 1
It is therefore my hope that all your efforts at this preliminary stage of the competition must be to give us your best in order to emerge winners that will represent us at the Grand finale.
English Language is Nigeria’s lingua franca that is why we expect all of you to master it by being able to spell its words properly.
You are the best from your various schools out of which we shall know who will represent the Primary and Secondary Schools.
Our judges, time keepers and recorders are ready to begin the competition. It is expected that they shall allow this event to flow without any reason to question your judgments and decisions.
I can see that some of you are wearing the uniform that the Amuwo Odofin Local Government under my administration provided for you; I therefore implore you to keep and maintain those uniforms neatly. I assure you that as the revenue of the Local Government improves we shall provide another uniform for you.
I am also proud to inform you that we recently gave 500 free JAMB/UTME application forms to indigent students in Amuwo Odofin Local Government and they are also presently undergoing JAMB preparatory coaching lectures at Central and 5th Avenue Primary Schools and they shall be writing JAMB Examination in April. This and many programs will be encouraged in the Education Department so as to alleviate the burden being shouldered by parents in Amuwo Odofin Local Government.
Due to quantum investment in education, the local government was given Top Educational Award at Jam Feast in Alausa. We also felt that all pupils must be computer compliant or literate, thus we organized “Train the Trainer” program for teachers.
In conclusion, I thanked all of you for coming and may the best candidates win the competition.
